Knowledge and wisdom are perhaps the greatest gift and treasure which mankind can possess.

In our desire to discover the origins of the universe and to learn of our destiny, many of us will endure considerable physical pain and financial hardship. Some of us will even travel to the very ends of the earth to find it, and even now, mankind reaches out towards the stars, among the distant galaxies of the universe, in the unrelenting quest for more and more knowledge.

However, the ultimate truth of mankind's origin may be found locked up in coded information within one of the oldest books of antiquity - The I Ching - the Chinese book of changes. This book, which has continuously inspired sages, philosophers and poets for over three thousand years has just revealed some of its secret knowledge. It originally emerged from obscurity in the north western part of China with a text of peasant omens and divination material. Recent studies by the author has indicated that it contains a mathematical science of continuous change and transformation which underlies all existence.

Research has now proved that the objective of its creators was to establish a language for communication between intelligences based on numbers and their symbolism. The commentary text of the I Ching consists of sixty-four linear symbols called hexagrams. These are derived from the association between trigram symbols and the divination interpretation of each hexagram for a given situation. What is particularly significant is the fact that the symbolism within the text forms a binary mathematical system which has been attributed to Baron von Leibniz, a 17th Century German mathematician.

It would be easy for any writer of science fiction to speculate upon the possibility that the ancient Chinese used computers over three thousand years ago. Such statements can only lead to the conclusion that at some early stage in the evolution of mankind contact was made with extra terrestrial beings. These beings, continually and periodically, stimulated the minds of a number of selected individuals. This contact over the past decades could have caused the pronounced effects and changes in the way in which mankind formulated his ideas and actions, leading to the advancement of the technological world which we now live in.

Although western scholars have usually surmised this significant fact as being purely co-incidental and meaningless (because the binary system, within the I Ching text, appears to have served only as a means to amplify the meaning of the divinatory interpretation) traditional scholars still cling to the belief that the contents of the text constitutes a vast repository of ancient ideas and hidden knowledge, but up to now very little proof has been published which could substantiate their claims.

The author's recent research suggests that the I Ching text does in fact contain a considerable amount of unusual mathematical and scientific knowledge, which must have been formulated in its present computerized form by an unknown advanced civilization.

The initiation of the research was the discovery of an unknown trigram cyclic sequence that had been incorporated within Tantric symbolism and Buddhist iconography, embossed on an old copper Tibetan Geomantic Calendar Mandala. This particular arrangement of trigram symbols differed from the two standard arrangements known as the Earlier Heaven and the Later Heaven arrangements, which are displayed in most books of the I Ching. At first, it was thought that a mistake had been made by the artisan who had fashioned this particular artefact. However, during subsequent investigations, additional and other different trigram cyclic sequence arrangements in a variety of art forms were found. Several artefacts were discovered with the trigram symbols cut into stone, carved from wood blocks and/or embossed onto metal objects of great antiquity.

By using a computer, the maximum number of possible combinations and/or permutations for the eight trigram cyclic arrangements was determined to be some 40,320 i.e. factorial 8! The possibility that mathematical and scientific knowledge could have been hidden in a coded form, prompted the author to conduct an in-depth examination and subsequent mathematical and biological analysis of the linear patterns which formed the various trigram cyclic sequences. Quite by chance, a discovery was made which has enabled the author to gain access to some of the immense wealth of hidden knowledge which has been stored for posterity within this strange but practical book of antiquity.

There is a considerable number of authors who are only involved in the divination aspect of the I Ching. John C. Compton's  research covers the very structure of the mathematical codes which are incorporated within the text of this ancient book.

For example, his research notes on Trigram Transition and the Symbolic /Numerical Representation of the numbers - 6, 7, 8 and 9, prove the symbolic / numerical relationship of the I Ching, i.e.


How strange it is that Richard Wilhelm, whether by design or perhaps unintentionally, made some of the most profound statements on the I Ching, regarding the nature and relationship of trigram line transition. For instance, in his introduction to the I Ching, he stated in support of an example that:

                  All of the lines of a hexagram do not necessarily change; it depends entirely on the        character of a given line. A line whose nature is positive, with increasing dynamism turns into its opposite, a negative line, whereas a positive line of lesser strength remains unchanged. The same principle holds for the negative lines.

                   More definite information about those lines which are considered to be so strongly charged with positive or negative energy that they move, is given in book II in the Great Commentary (pt. 1 chapter IX), and in the special section on the use of the oracle at the end of the book.

Richard Wilhelm then made this profound statement -

Suffice it to say here that positive lines that move are designated by the number 9, and negative lines that move by the number 6, while none moving lines which serve only as the structural matter in the hexagram, without intrinsic meaning of their own, are represented by the number 7 (positive) and the number 8 (negative).*

Thus, when the text reads, "Nine in the beginning means....  " this is the equivalent of saying:

"When the positive line in the first place is represented by the number 9, it has the following meaning...." If on the other hand, the line is represented by the number 7, it is disregarded in the interpreting of the oracle. The same principle holds for lines represented by the number 6 and 8 respectively.

If we now refer to the Great Commentary, as suggested by Richard Wilhelm, a considerable amount of additional information can be obtained.

For instance Chapter IX - On the Oracle -

Section 1 - informs us that the section contains speculations about numbers similar to those in the section entitled Hung Fan in the Book of History (Shu Ching), which may represent the beginning of the connection between the number speculation of the Book of History and the yin-yang doctrine of the Book of Changes, which played an important role in Chinese thought, especially under the Han dynasty.

Which means, that there is a direct relationship between numbers and the yin-yang doctrine.

Section 7 - informs us that the eight signs constitute each a small completion and that a hexagram is made up of two trigrams. The "eight signs" are the eight primary trigrams. In addition it informs us that the lower trigram is also called the inner trigram, and the upper trigram may be called the outer trigram.

Which means, that the hexagram is made up of two trigrams, the lower being the inner and the upper the outer trigram. (This is particularly important for determining the trigram arrangement for cyclic sequences or trigram discs).

Section 8 - informs us that each of the sixty-four hexagrams can change into another through the appropriate movement of one or more lines.

Which means, that each hexagram can change if line movement occurs.

There is still more information of trigram transition given in Part 1, Chapter 1 -The Changes in the Universe and in the Book of Changes   -

In Section 1 - Richard Wilhelm informs us that in the Book of Changes, a distinction is made between three kinds of change: non-change, cyclic change, and sequent change, and he continues with the following statement -

                   Non-change is the background, as it were, against which change is made possible. For in regard to any change there must be a fixed point to which change can be referred; otherwise there can be no definite order and everything is dissolved into chaotic movement.

                   This point of reference must be established and this always requires a choice and a decision.  It makes possible a system of co-ordinates into which everything else can be fitted.

Which means, that a reference point must be established to enable a system of co-ordinates to be created, into which everything else can be fitted.

Richard Wilhelm also states that:

                    The ultimate frame of reference for all that changes is the non-changing.

Which means, that the reference point is a non-changing point of reference.

Section 2 - informs us that the eight trigrams succeed one another by turns, as the firm and then the yielding displace each other.

Richard Wilhelm then makes another profound statement -

                    Here cyclic change is explained. It is the rotation of phenomena, each succeeding the other until the starting point is reached again. Examples are furnished by the course of the day and year, and by the phenomena that occurs in the organic world during these cycles.

                    Cyclic change, then, is recurrent change in the organic world, whereas sequent change means the progressive (non-recurrent change) of phenomena produced by causality.

Which means, that cyclic change is a rotation of phenomena that is recurrent, whilst sequent change is progressive (non-recurrent change) of phenomena that is produced by causality.

Richard Wilhelm then continues with yet another profound statement on hexagram lines.

                  The firm and the yielding displace each other within the eight trigrams. Thus the firm is transformed, melts as it were, and becomes the yielding; the yielding changes, coalesces, as it were and becomes the firm. In this way the eight trigrams change from one another in turn, and the regular alternation of phenomena within the year takes it course.

Which means, that the lines within the trigrams may change from one to another to create a different trigram.

In Chapter X - The Four Fold Use of the Book of Changes -

Section 3 - informs us that the three and five operations are undertaken in order to obtain a change. Divisions and combinations of the numbers are made. If one proceeds through the changes, they complete the forms of Heaven and Earth. If the number of changes is increased to the utmost, they determine all the images on earth. If this were not the most changing thing on earth how could it do this?

Richard Wilhelm then states -

                   A great deal has been said about the "three and five" divisions, and even Chi Hsi is of the opinion that this passage is no longer comprehensible.

In fact this may be quite comprehensible, as the three fold division may be associated with the geometric proposition of Pythagoras, and the five fold division may refer to the pentagon which incorporates the mathematical irrational  constants of the Universe within its symmetry.

What we may ask do all these profound statements by Richard Wilhelm mean?

All these statements tell us that:

  • A trigram symbol may change into another trigram by the transition of individual lines or by the movement of trigram lines within a cyclic sequence.

  • The statements provide us with The Law of Trigram Transition and its relationship with numerology.

  • The positive line represented thus_____ becomes the negative line represent thus__  __ and vice versa.

  • Numerically it means the following:

          Positive to Positive lines     = 7 (non-changing line)

          Negative to Negative lines = 8 (non-changing line)

          Positive to Negative lines   = 9 (changing line)

          Negative to Positive lines   = 6 (changing line)

These simple line transformations form and represent -

                                 THE RULE OF TRIGRAM LINE TRANSITION

It also means, that the trigram symbols may be represented as a unique set of three numbers and vice versa. In this manner each trigram that forms a circular arrangement, known as a cyclic sequence or trigram disk, can be given a unique set of clockwise and anti-clockwise numerical values, which are dependent on the lines of the adjoining trigrams next to it.

It should be noted that the number created by the transition is always assigned to the trigram line initializing the change.


* This statement by Richard Wilhelm is in the author's opinion not correct, because there is a direct mathematical relationship between the I Ching numerical line values  and the Genetic Code, i.e,

                    Adenine = 7, Cytosine = 9, Guanine = 6, Thymine / Uracil = 8

Similar documentary evidence of the author's research is described in considerable detail within his five books. In the course of the research, the original arrangement of the sixty-four square matrix grid known as the "Key for identifying hexagrams" was discovered and proved to have been utilized as a visual display board, where hexagrams represent computer pixels.

The 1st volume of the research work conclusively proves that the I Ching - the book of changes, forms part of an ancient computer system, where a vast library of data and information is stored in a symbolic and pictographic format.

The 2nd volume shows the results of the author's research, which conclusively proves the relationship between the I Ching and the Genetic code. The evidence presented shows that this relationship is based on a sixty-four numerical eight by eight matrix system, where each individual numerical digit represents the Vedic summation of the electrons contained within the molecular structure of an individual polynucleotide chain. The mathematical methodology utilized appears to be reminiscent of the Chinese lost formalistic natural philosophy that sought to embrace the entire world of thought in a system of number symbols, which saw its beginning during the Ch'in and Han dynasties.

The 3rd volume contains examples of the analytical methodology employed. It also contains many technological images, obtained from a number of pictographic samples, extracted from the library of rediscovered hidden symbolic data.

The 4th volume contains additional research notes on the Genetic Code matrix system, molecular biological mathematics and a hypothesis on the Diversity of Species.

The 5th volume contains the author's research notes on the I Ching and its mathematical relationship with Magic Squares, Genetic Code molecular Hyper-cubes and the Gates of Destiny. It conclusively proves and re-affirms his interpretation of Richard Wilhelm's comments, regarding the Yin/Yang trigram line transformation and non-transformation, which changes the ancient linear line language into a simple numerical line language (Refer to Volume 1, Chapter 7 - Number Mysticism and Yin/Yang line transformation).

It shows that the mathematical methodology utilized by the ancient Chinese scribes may have been created in a mystical manner, as it involves the formulation of a unique diagram which represents the "five stages of change" and the mathematical disposition of the natural elements, represented by the Vedic summation of the Heavenly and Earthly numerical characteristics of the Ho T'u - The Dragon Horse diagram and the Lo Shu - The Tortoise diagram.

The 6th volume is the most important I Ching Project document. It contains the key coded methodologies which may have been used by Fu Hsi and King Wen. It provides additional conclusive evidence that the originator(s) of the I Ching employed a mathematical system (developed during the Ch'in and Han dynasties) which encompassed a formalistic natural philosophy that sought to embrace the entire world in a system of number symbolism.

The research documentation within this book shows how the sixty-four hexagrams were formulated by a combination of trigrams selected from the Earlier Heaven and Later Heaven cyclic sequences. It contains the mathematical methodology and the step by step procedures which may have been employed by King Wen to create the Trigram Order of Completion and the Standard (Modern) Key Code matrices from the original Ma-wang-tui matrix of sixty-four hexagrams.

This book will astonish many practitioners of divination as the author proves that the I Ching or book of changes is an ancient time capsule of hidden mathematics and science which has survived the ravages of time.
